Magpie-New Adventures in Jewellery

Magpie is a highly engaging exhibition showcasing over 70 works by 24 extraordinary contemporary New Zealand jewellers. They’ve been rifling through the kitchen cupboards, stalking the $2 shops and beachcombing. Often playful on one level, the works are rich in memory and meaning. A strong interest in textile traditions and materials is a key feature – but it doesn’t stop there. Plastics, felt, hessian, cockle shells, postage stamps, old cake tins, old coins and product packaging all pour forth from a veritable cornucopia.

Curated by former Director of TheNewDowse, Tim Walker, MAGPIE presents a broad survey of current New Zealand Jewellery. It ranges from the work of senior jewellers - such as Lisa walker, Pauline Bern and the members of the Weeds Collective - to recent graduates from the MIT and Unitec jewellery course.  As such it's a rare chance for audiences to see what's going on in what may well be the most vibrant and conceptually rich contemporary art sector in New Zealand today.
