About the Museum

It is 30 years since a district museum opened in Story Place, Taupo. Today's museum has its origins in the Taupo Historical Society, formed in 1963, and from the Taupo Regional Museum & Arts Centre, formed in 1975.  The museum society built onto the Taupo Public Library in 1978 with the museum opening in March 1979.

First Taupo Museum buildings built in 1979

In 1992 the museum expanded throughout the whole building as the Taupo Library had shifted to new premises. In 2002 the building was transformed into a contemporary museum and art gallery, including a whare ‘Te Aroha o Rongoheikume' displaying an historic set of Taupo carvings. The museum society was dissolved in October 2005 and the facility came under the management of the Taupo District Council.

On Sunday 15 March 2009, Taupo Museum celebrated 30 years to the day since Sir Hepi te Heuheu opened the first museum buildings in 1979.
