Tauponui a Tia - Tales of the Taupo Country
Written by Ralph H Ward Edited by Gerard and Marion Ward
The book comprises a series of newspaper articles first published in the Taupo Times in the 1950s under the heading Taupōnui A Tia – Tales of the Taupō Country. The Taupo Country was a term that was used for the Lake Taupo district early last century much in the way the King Country is used for that area today.
The articles were written and researched by Ralph Ward who first came to Taupo in 1918. In his 40 years here, Ralph developed a broad understanding of the district’s history. The articles are wide-ranging covering early Maori history, accounts by early European visitors to Taupo, the origin of many local place names and much more.
